P0420: Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (Bank 1)

The catalyst monitor has detected performance outside its expected range on bank 1. This does not by itself establish that the converter needs replacement.

  • Sensor or wiring faults; fuel-control or misfire problems

Diagnostic approach

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for misfire or fuel-trim codes first.
  2. Inspect for exhaust leaks and wiring damage before testing sensor response.
  3. Follow the manufacturer catalyst-monitor procedure at the required operating temperature.

Save codes and freeze-frame information before clearing anything. A cleared warning light does not prove that a repair worked; the applicable monitor must run again.
